A Farewell to Spooky Season (Until Next Year) 🎃 + Election Reflections

From Eden's Desk

Dearest Readers,

Halloween is behind us, and I can't help but feel a bittersweet pang at saying goodbye to spooky season. There’s something about this time of year—the shadows, the mysterious atmospheres, and the thrill of the unknown—that I always find hard to let go of. For me, it's not just about ghosts and costumes, but the feeling of stepping into stories where the veil between worlds feels just a bit thinner, where anything seems possible.

As we move from the whimsical darkness of October into the crisp resolve of November, we're reminded of something equally powerful—the importance of our voices. With Election Day around the corner, I find myself reflecting on the legacy of those who fought for the right to vote and be heard, especially in a year that feels as though we’re teetering on the edge of a different kind of horror—one in which basic human rights, long fought for and hard-won, are again at risk.

This reminds me of Abigail from For Love and Liberty. Thrust into a place of power she didn’t ask for, Abigail inherits the burden of a system built on the suffering of others. In her innocence, she sees, truly sees, the hardships of those who’ve been oppressed by that very system. And, rather than turning a blind eye, she chooses to take responsibility and fight for change, even if it means risking her own comfort and safety. Abigail’s journey is about using her power not to uphold the injustices of the past but to dismantle them—a courage I think we all wish to see more of in the real world.

But this year, instead of making strides toward a brighter future, it feels as if we’re forced to stand guard at the gates of rights we thought were secure, simply to avoid slipping backward. So, as we say goodbye to the lingering shadows of October, we’re also bracing ourselves for the very real shadows November brings—a reminder that, sometimes, the scariest stories aren’t found in books but in the headlines.

Still, as Abigail shows us, hope is not passive. It is active. It is resilient. And it is fueled by the belief that every step, however small, matters. So this November, I invite you to hold onto that hope, to use your voice, and, like Abigail, to believe that we each have a role in shaping a future where fairness and compassion prevail.

With love and a sprinkle of autumn leaves,
Eden

Hello Reader, September brought something special — the release of Tides of Reckoning, Book 2 in the Tides series — and I’ve been so grateful for your notes, reviews, and quiet moments shared about the story. I worried it might feel like a “bridge book,” but you’ve reminded me that middle stories can be some of the most powerful… especially when the stakes are rising and the heart of a heroine like Izzy is on the line. As I step back from the world of storms and salt air, I’m letting new...

Hello Reader, Here’s a confession: Tides of Captivation only exists because I made a joke.I know... But it's true... I’d finished For Love and Liberty (though I hadn’t worked up the nerve to publish it yet), and I was turning over ideas for what might come next—something I could write and market consistently, while living aboard a sailboat in the Florida Keys. One day, in the middle of all this wondering, I looked at my husband and said:“What am I going to do, write pirate stories?” The...

From Eden's Desk HeyReader, Just a quick note today — starting next month, I’ll be sending this newsletter once a month, on the 1st. You’ll also hear from me on release days, so nothing important will slip past you. Like a lot of folks in the LGBTQIA+ and autistic communities right now, my mental health has been stretched thin. I’m doing what I can to protect the small spark I have — and that means pulling back from some things to keep creating the things that matter most. Which brings me to...
